Remi Harris & Mark Schmidt will kick off Brockport Summer Dance 2021 in just a few days. We couldn't be more excited to have 5 days of opportunity to soak in their approaches to Improvisation, Community, and Collaboration.
In that spirit, we wanted to share and highlight one of their more recent collaborations as part of a split bill at Triskelion Arts in New York City. Yes! Yes! Yes! seeks to explore "notions of democratic dance space, the ethic of freedom, and the club as an adult playground," according to Remi & Mark.
"The work finds a play between camp, performance and joy in movement while attempting to capture the parallel and intersecting paths of a dynamic creative process that includes going out to the club and creating in the studio. We value the ephemeral, social interactions that emerge on the dance floor and view that physical space as a site where dancing bodies re(produce) cultural knowledge and values."
Enjoy their unique approaches and so so much more with dedicated HOUSE CLASSES:
House dance is an improvisational social dance form with roots in African American vernacular jazz. Stylistically it combines short footwork phrases (often resembling swing or tap) with large, athletically challenging movements emphasizing grace and control. This class covers the foundational movement vocabulary in house, footwork, floorwork, turning, and transitions to the floor. As a group we will look at the concept of play as it relates to music, movement and exchanges between dancers.
