Summer 2021
Aug 16 - 28, 2021
The Department of Dance welcomes Rochester-based artist Nicolette Ferguson (Brockport MFA ’20) along with Brooklyn-based duo Remi Harris & Mark D. Schmidt (Brockport MFA ’08) to share their approaches to dance technique, choreography, and repertory. Ferguson is internationally renowned for her performance career with Garth Fagan Dance, interweaving her sensibility as a contemporary dancer with the African canon. Harris & Schmidt collaborate to bring principles of House dance to the studio in order to meld elements of club culture with post-modernism.

In addition to teaching and sharing artistry throughout the 2-week IN PERSON workshop, this intensive will allow participants to explore purposeful and in depth embodiment of these movement practices. Days and evenings will be peppered with documentary screenings, artist conversations, a DJ-ed dance jam, and opportunities to create. Participants will also be invited to perform in a new creative work created by Ferguson throughout the workshop (Danscore 2021).
“I’m most excited to be in community with artists again.”
Jordan D. Lloyd, BSD Guest Artist 2020
Our Mission
Brockport Summer Dance is an immersive dance intensive focusing on contemporary techniques, repertory, and choreography. Intermediate to advanced dancers will have opportunity to study with innovative choreographers and professional dancers. By connecting artists, we believe that we support the growth of the individual and the field.
The Dance Department is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance and offers the option to double major in the BFA program as well as in the BA/BS tracks. At the graduate level, we offer an MFA designed to balance performance, choreography, and theory. Our students excel not only in the studio and on stage, but also as critical thinkers, writers and teachers.
