Jordan Lloyd, a SUNY Brockport graduate, has returned to campus virtually to teach at the Brockport Summer Dance Workshop. Lloyd is Zooming in from NYC to teach Contemporary Technique and Embodied Performance.
Workshop participants consist of current Brockport students and alumni, and select classes are open to the general public for drop-ins in a pay what you can format ($1-$25).
Lloyd’s classes begin with a free write, giving students and opportunity to restart every day and check in. Class progresses through various guided improvisations and exploration of set material, and ends in a collective reflection.
Each class is different, and has attention on addressing dancers’ growth and progression as an individual. Lloyd has focused on finding individuality in the performance of the material. After teaching a movement phrase, Lloyd offers students the chance to workshop the movement for themselves. Space is given for experimenting, creating narratives in the movement, and cultivating a sense of ownership of their dancing bodies in phrasework.
The Brockport Summer Dance Workshop gives current students a chance to step back into dancing with familiar faces and get them ready for the demands of the coming Fall semester. Navigating being a dancer in the midst of a pandemic is a real challenge, but BSD participants are hopeful and positive about the future from their experience so far.
“We have adapted to virtual classes and we’ve already gotten so much better at connecting and dancing together,” shared Sophie Constable, a workshop participant and current Brockport Dance Major. “We’ve come a long way from where we were back in March when we were still trying to figure out how to do this.”
Only four days in to the 10-day Workshop, there are still plenty of opportunities for the dancers to benefit from Lloyd’s engagement and encouragement as they collectively rediscover what it means to dance together in the current world. With Lloyd and the other BSD artists and instructors, the rest of the virtual workshop experience is sure to fly by!
